My Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies
Since it’s Halloween, I thought it’d be the perfect time to share my 10 top favorite horror movies. This is one of my favorite times of the year because I get to indulge in all things scary! If you love horror just as much as I do, then you’ll love this list! Happy Halloween, ASSASSINS!
10. Leprechaun
An all time classic, where an evil Leprechaun goes on a killing spree in search of his pot of gold. Although the short description doesn’t sound quite scary, it actually is. That little Leprechaun moves quick and is very strategic with how he kills people! They came out with a bunch of sequels but I only prefer Leprechaun 1 & 2. If you want a good laugh with some killing mixed in, watch Leprechaun in the Hood.
9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 version)
If you’ve attended any haunted house attraction or Six Flags: Fright Fest, then you know anyone running towards you with a chainsaw is terrifying! The Texas Chainsaw Massacre starts out as your typical horror movie where a group of friends go on a road trip. As always, they pick up a hitchhiker and then everything else goes downhill from there. They find themselves being hunted by a deformed chainsaw killer and his family. Yes. . . it’s a family of these psychopaths LOL! Anyhow, it’s a great story line and tons of killing of course.
8. A Nightmare on Elm Street
One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. . .
This was the first movie that had me scared to go to sleep as a child! How innovative to have the serial killer slaughter you in your dreams and get stronger from your fear. How the heck is anyone supposed to survive that? LOL! Nonetheless, Freddy Krueger’s appearance was absolutely terrifying. A burnt man, with a glove that has razors as the fingers and he’s practically invulnerable while in the dream world. There’s an entire series with A Nightmare on Elm Street but I only prefer 1 & 2 however, you can binge watch up to number 6!
7. The Strangers
I found this movie quite terrifying because it could happen in real life. Although the plot is quite basic, the creators found amazing ways to make it horrifying! The Strangers takes place in an isolated family home where a couple expects to have a relaxing weekend. However, three strangers see that the couple is home and decides to make them captives in their own house. It’s interesting how the writers did this movie because the couple wants to get out of the house. . . but they can’t. Additionally, they’re trying to keep these strangers out but obviously have a difficult time in doing so. It’s a lot of suspense and build up in this movie. . . I was on edge while watching it the entire time! It definitely makes you think twice about locking all your doors and having some type of escape plan if anything were to happen.
6. Halloween
I binge watch this classic movie every year on AMC when they do the marathon! LOL. Halloween really started the revolution with modernizing the horror genre. There was no Dracula or werewolf. . . it was a tall, scary masked man that lived in the house next door. What makes Halloween so great is that almost all high school girls could relate to it. I mean who hasn’t babysat before? Then you look outside and see this shape just staring at you in the shadows. What makes it worse is that the “Boogeyman” better known as Michael Myers couldn’t be killed. He was really a force of evil! I enjoy all the Halloween sequels. . . even #4 with Laurie’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) daughter Jamie. That little girl could seriously do some acting! Now that I think of it, there was two sequels that I could do without and that was Halloween 6 and Halloween: Resurrection.
5. Don’t Breathe
So this one was more of a suspense/thriller to me rather than horror BUT it was a freaking awesome movie! The plot for Don’t Breathe starts with three intruders who enter a blind veteran’s house in search for a large sum of cash. They thought since he was blind that he’d be an easy target. . . but they were absolutely wrong. Once inside, they discover the truth about the veteran and find themselves fighting for their lives to escape his house. I love this movie so much that I plan on buying the DVD! Once you discover the truth about the veteran, you’ll see why it was such a big hit!
4. The Conjuring
One of my favorite paranormal movies because it’s based on a true story. . . which makes it even more scary! The Conjuring shows how two paranormal investigators (Ed and Lorraine Warren) are called to the home of The Perrons. The family of seven recently move into a secluded farmhouse, where they start to notice a supernatural presence. Things begin to go from bad to worst once The Warrens arrive and that’s when the movie starts to get good! There’s tons of pop outs that’ll catch you off guard and lots of suspense. I think what really makes The Conjuring scary is that the Perrons and the Warrens are real people. You can even go to the Warren’s house and see their basement where they hold all their haunted artifacts! Yes, that includes the doll “Annabelle” too. . . which is somewhat a sequel to this movie.
3. Saw
Imagine waking up, not knowing where you are and being trapped in some type of contraption. Then this horrific doll rides out on a red bike and tells you that it’s time to play a game. . . how insane! If you haven’t seen the Saw series (all of which I love by the way) then you need to! Jigsaw takes us through a whirlwind of deadly “games” that are absolutely mind boggling. People turn on each other to live and have difficult decisions to make throughout the movie. Saw is more so gory than scary to me but still such a great movie, that’ll have you guessing with lots of twists and turns!
2. Child’s Play
Chucky was anything but a good guy and we can thank Charles Lee Ray for that. The movie starts by showing murderer Charles, being gunned down by a detective in a toy store. Everyone thinks he is dead but he actually used black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky. Unbeknownst to Karen, she buys the doll from a bum on the street and gives it to her son, Andy. Once Chucky kills Andy’s babysitter, he realizes that the doll is alive and tries to warn everyone. As always, no one believes him and Andy ends up institutionalized instead. Only one person knows that the doll is alive and that’s Andy’s mother, Karen. She does everything in her power to make the detective believe before Chucky tries to kill Andy and take his body. This movie terrified me as a child because what kid didn’t have some type of doll? They made it so realistic! I enjoy all of the Child’s Play sequels except Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. . . watch those two for a good laugh.
1. Paranormal Activity
This movie had me scared for quite some time! They really took the “real life” camera angles to another level. . . much like the “documentary” style we saw in Blair Witch Project. I love a good paranormal movie because you can’t see the killer and they strike day or night! Paranormal Activity starts with a young couple Katie and Micah who move into a new home. Shortly after, they start experiencing a supernatural presence. So Micah decides to document it 24/7 by setting up video cameras all throughout the house. The couple isn’t prepared for what they’re about to find out! I love Paranormal Activity because it takes place in their home, which is supposed to be a safe place. Additionally, the demonic presence causes so much build up, fear and pops out when you least expect it! I liked all of the sequels since it tells the entire story but could’ve passed on Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.
ADDED BONUS! Get Out
How could I not have added this move?
So the story starts by showing interracial couple Chris and Rose discussing their dating milestone. Rose insists that it’s time for Chris to meet her parents, who live upstate as a weekend getaway. Once they arrive, Chris thinks her parent’s odd behavior is a weird attempt to deal with the fact that he’s African American. However, as the story continues, Chris encounters a lot more disturbing discoveries that eventually leads him to the truth. This movie will have you screaming and yelling at the screen, with a pretty reasonable amount of laughs! Jordan Peele did a phenomenal job with writing and directing Get Out because he keeps us actively engaged the entire time. Not only that, he blesses us with a character that says everything the audience would say if put in that situation! It’s really an amazing movie that I couldn’t leave off of this list!
