How to Stop Consuming Content and Start Creating it Instead

how to stop consuming content and start creating it

We consume so much content on a regular basis and quite frankly, I can’t blame us because it’s so easy to get caught up! I find myself opening up a social media app for a specific reason and 20 minutes later (after scrolling), asking myself why I opened it in the first place. It’s easy to get consumed in other people’s content that we fail to create more of our own! So here’s 4 quick tips on how you can stop consuming content and start creating it instead.

Set a Timer

What helps me limit my content consumption on any social media app is setting a timer. If I get caught up with scrolling endlessly, the timer is a way to snap me back into reality. This helps me significantly as there’s been times I’ve spent an hour consuming content and didn’t even realize it! That entire hour could’ve been utilized by creating my own content instead of scrolling through others.

Disable Notifications

I used to think I needed to see every single notification from my social media apps or else I’d miss something. Once I decided to overall limit my time on social media, I knew the best thing to keep me off of it would be disabling the notifications. This helps significantly because you don’t get a “reminder” to log back in. . . especially if you weren’t thinking of it to begin with. I learned very quickly that turning off notifications did not prevent me from missing out anything!

Have a Purpose

Frequently, I would find myself opening apps just to be opening them and scrolling for however long I wanted to. After realizing how much time I truly wasted with doing that, I made it a habit to never log on without having a purpose. For example, I will open an app with the purpose to engage with my current community and new accounts. This way, instead of just scrolling and in-taking content, I’m always growing my account(s) by engaging and meeting new people.

Plan Ahead

What helps me significantly with creating my content is planning it all ahead of time. I curate it, finalize my caption and schedule it to post automatically. Once it’s scheduled, everything is pretty much out of sight out of mind! I like this because I’m not obsessing over numbers or lurking all day online. . . it’s literally that phrase “set it and forget it!”
