6 Natural Hair Care Tips For The Winter Season
I’m sharing six natural hair care tips for the winter season because. . . winter is coming! (Who else watches Game of Thrones? Lol) Anyways, with these cold winter days rapidly approaching, us natural girls need to protect our curly tresses. Before you read, your girl has FINALLY took the leap with affiliate marketing (yaaassss!!!). So you know I have to tell y’all that some of these links will bring me coins if you purchase the product(s). I think that’s all I have to tell y’all, right? If not, let me know in the comments! Lol but anyways. . . onto these six tips to protect our natural hair in the winter season!
1. Deep Condition WEEKLY
Y’all don’t hear me when it comes to this! Deep conditioning your hair with some type of heat is KEY. . . and it shouldn’t take the winter months for you to do so. I personally deep condition under a steamer for 30-40 minutes every week, year round. It really makes a huge difference with retaining moisture and length. With the cold dry air, it’s essential to use a deep treatment masque that’ll penetrate your hair strands and restore that lost moisture. Trust me, after a few weeks you’ll notice more shine, moisture and length.
My favorite deep conditioners:
- Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex 10-In-1 Renewal System Hair Masque
- Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque
2. Use Heavier Creams and Oils
No more coconut or olive oil to seal your hair strands. . . especially if you’re a type 4 curly girl like myself! It’s time to switch out your oils and creams for heavier ones that can combat that dry air. Instead of grabbing your favorite “moisture milk” look for heavier creams that are “butter” based.
My Favorite Hair Butters and Oils:
- Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter
- Mountain Rose Herbs Castor Oil
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil (Peppermint)
3. Hats are Your Best Friend
I don’t know about you. . . but I need a hat here in the tri-state area anyway! So why not do double duty by protecting your hair, while keeping yourself warm. If you’re going to wear a hat, please make sure it’s lined with satin or wear a satin bonnet underneath it. No point in having that cotton suck up all the moisture from your hair!
My Favorite Satin-lined Hats & Bonnets:
- Virtuous Stitch

4. Protective Styles
This is the time where you can have fun and experiment! As long as your ends are protected then you’re good. I know a lot of naturals who do loose buns or twists and then tie their hair up. Anything to make sure that your ends aren’t rubbing against those cotton scarves or sweaters.
My Go To Protective Styles:
- Box braids
- Crochet braids
5. Say Goodbye to Wash and Go’s
I know a lot of naturals rely on their trusty wash and go however, during the winter season it can be a pain! First off, you’ll need a day or so (unless you’re going to use heat on your hair every week) for it to dry. If you’re a busy natural and don’t have the time to wait, then you’ll be going outside with wet hair. Additionally, with your hair out in the open as such you’re asking for that cold, dry air to suck up all your moisture! Instead, try opting for twists or a protective style and give your hair a break.
6. L- Leave In C- Cream O- Oil Method
I prefer the L.C.O method year round and just switch up my products to “winterized” ones when needed. By sealing with an oil, I find that my hair retains much more moisture as I don’t experience dryness throughout the week. For the winter months, switch up your products as I discussed above and try sealing with a heavier oil instead.
My Favorite L.C.O Products:
- L – Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Leave-In Conditioner
- C – Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter
- O – Mountain Rose Herbs Castor Oil
I know I didn’t mention many products and that’s because when I find what works, I stick to it! So what’s your favorite hair regimen for the winter season? Let me know in the comments and please don’t forget to subscribe!
