My Experience with Formulate: Customized Shampoo & Conditioner

As a natural type 4 girl, I know what products my hair likes and doesn’t like (lots of trial and error). So when Formulate reached out to me, I immediately told them that I didn’t think their products would work for my hair type. However, once I was informed that my shampoo and conditioner would be customized to my preference, I was in! Here’s my review of Formulate’s customized shampoo and conditioner!

 

How it Works:

So with Formulate you don’t just go on the site, choose your products, add them to the cart and checkout. Since it’s completely customized, you have to create your formulas first. They ask an array of questions such as:

  • Age
  • Female or Male
  • Color of Hair
  • Length of Hair
  • Curl Pattern
  • Thickness
  • How oily your hair is
  • Sensitivity of your scalp
  • If you have any dandruff & how often do you notice it

They then get into your daily routine which entails questions like, how many times per week do you shampoo and condition your hair. How often do you style it and/or use tools, what gels, hair spray etc are used. Not only that, they also ask for your location to see what the weather will be like in your area! I thought that question was key as our climates definitely affect how our hair grows and responds to products. Lastly, they ask for your hair goals, scent preferences, ingredient choices and how powerful or light you prefer your scents to be. I was seriously impressed by the questions they asked and how detailed it was. 

 

Shipping & Packaging

I’m very keen when it comes to shipping times and presentation of my packages. I feel as though opening items should be a pleasant experience for the customer. Formulate did not disappoint on either! I submitted my survey and placed the order on the night of Halloween. Formulate had my order shipped and delivered by November 9th! That’s only 9 days to whip up the formula, package it and transit time to my house. Additionally, their packaging is absolutely gorgeous! When I opened the box, they had my name printed with an overview of my survey questions and preferred ingredients. Formulate gets an A+ for speedy shipping and excellent packaging!

Testing Out the Shampoo & Conditioner

The shampoo instantly became my favorite for a few reasons. It has amazing lather, I didn’t need to use a lot (which shocked me considering how thick my hair is), it leaves my strands soft, manageable and the orange scent is so relaxing! I’ve had Formulate’s shampoo for 4 weeks now and it’s been my go to during every wash day. They definitely nailed the formula and get an A+!

The conditioner is where we get a little rocky! If you have type 4 hair then you know how crucial it is to have a conditioner with lots of slip and is thick enough to melt into our strands. Currently, I deep condition my hair once a week and have instant conditioners for those days when I don’t have time to sit under the steamer for 30 – 45mins. Formulate’s conditioner is what I would consider an instant as it’s lightweight, doesn’t require heat or steam and only needs to be left on for 15 – 20mins.

The first time I used the conditioner, it was an absolute FAIL! Here’s why, I needed a trim BAD so my hair was ridiculously tangled and knotted. During times like these, it’s imperative to use an intensive deep conditioner that specializes in split ends etc. So I decided to set aside the Formulate conditioner and give it a fair try once I trimmed my hair. The following week, I tried the conditioner again and it was spot on! I was able to quickly apply the product, work it through my strands and rinse easily. My only request for next time will be to get a thicker consistency that has a little more slip. 

 

Final Thoughts

Formulate definitely has something going here with customized hair products! It’s needed and such a great idea for women and men everywhere. The customer service is excellent, they’re extremely detailed with their survey questions and shipping/presentation was phenomenal! I will definitely order from them again; especially considering that I now know what ingredients/formulas work for me and how I can tweak it better in the future.
