Are you sitting there right now daydreaming about a job you don’t have? Are you sitting there thinking about what it would be like to have a career that you are passionate about? That makes you want to get up in the morning instead of hiding under the duvet? Do you wish that you had done something different? Well my friend, you are not alone. So many people find themselves stuck in a job they don’t like, simply because the wages pay the bills and that’s it. You spend such a big chunk of your waking hours needing to work; that it can actually become something that you loathe. Instead, wouldn’t it be great to have a job that you like?

Of course, that might be the dream for many people… but is it possible to make this your reality? Often it takes a little courage, a little background work before it happens and a little effort on your part. It can be done, people do change their lives for the better, and it can often start with your job and career. So do you want to make it happen? Then here are some of the steps that you should take.

What is it you want to do?

The first step you need to take is to think long and hard about what it is that you want to do. What is the dream job? What is the ideal working scenario for you? In theory, this can be the hardest thing to decide upon. So it might be worth looking at your past job experience and making some attempts to figure out what it is you want from there. Are you particularly skilled in an area? What is it that interests you? What do you like to do in your spare time? Do you already have a hobby that could be monetized and taken to the next level? Figuring these things out can help you decide on the right path to take to make this become your reality.

Knowing what it will take to make it a reality

Once you know what it is you want to do, you can now finalize a plan on how to make it happen, and in some cases this might mean taking some time out to learn new skills or gain further experience. This interesting article from Regis College highlights some of the careers where certain skills are needed; which could be a motivator to help you decide on the path you want to take. Other things, aside from gaining qualifications, could be to volunteer in your spare time, or take a different job role within a business and learn on the job.

Writing up a resume to make it happen

Once the groundwork has taken place, you can now put plans into action. The first thing you need to do is update that resume and get it out there to potential employers. You also want to list previous job roles, experience, qualifications and make it specific to the job you want. This will highlight the experience you have and how it’ll work well for the position. You’ll immediately eliminate an employer having to look more into your resume to determine whether you’re right for the role or not.
